Lets get you driving!

Once you have your Learner Licence we will get you driving from your very first driving lesson.

In addition to getting you behind the wheel we also place a high emphasis on the following:

  • Being road safe and road smart
  • Doing a PRE TEST assessment in the area you will be doing your restricted licence.
  • We will advise you of your test readiness before going for a practical test.
  • Car maintenance

We know that the licence process can be an expensive one, so we will do our best to help you save money and get to your next level licence

All lessons are 1 hour long and we will pick you up and drop you off at a pre agreed location.

For example we can pick you up at school and drop you off at home, or pick you up from work at your lunch break and return you back to work.

Do you have more than 5 years driving experience and have you held your restricted licence for more than 5 years?

If you have answered "YES" to this question, you are not alone.
The average age for a person to go from their restricted licence to full licence is in their mid twenties.

However with the licence time limits, you are now required to get to the next stage or risk starting all over as a learner.

If your restricted licence was obtained or last renewed before 1 December 2014, you can renew it at any time. However, your new licence will only be issued for five years.
If your five year learner or restricted car or motorcycle licence was obtained or last renewed on or after 1 December 2014, you cannot renew it until on or after the date of its expiry. You will need to pass a theory test and your new licence will be issued for a further five years.

Defensive Driving

Road Code Driving School Rail Crossing

Would you like to reduce your wait time by 6 months?

If you have gained your Restricted Licence, a completed Defensive Driving Course can help you to fast track to your full licence more quickly:

  • if you are under 25 the wait time is reduced by 6 months
  • if you are over 25 the wait time is reduced by 3 months
A defensive driving course also increases your chances of passing your practical test first time!

Another advantage is that completing a defensive driving course will also help you to become a safer driver.

What's involved?

All sessions are led by a NZTA and NZQA qualified instructor.

During these sessions you will need to complete:

  • 4 x 2 hour classroom sessions
  • 1 x 1 hour in car practical session
  • Online driver training session

Please note you will need access to the internet to complete the online eDrive modules.

You will also need a road legal vehicle to complete the practical aspect of the course. If you do not have a vehicle available for this, you can rent the instructor's car. All prices are on the pricing page.

Can I attend?

The following people can attend a defensive driving course:

  • Learner Licence Holders
  • Restricted Licence Holders
  • Overseas Conversion Licence Holders
  • Full Licence Holders
As there is a practical 1 hour aspect to the course, Learner Licence holders do need to be be able to drive to a good standard.

We recommend that learner licence holders attend the course once they've held their learner licence for a minimum of 3 months and have had about 30-40 hours driving experience.

Overseas Conversion

Road Code Driving School Left Side Driving

Some countries may have driver licensing systems that are very different from New Zealand's while other countries require similar driving skills.

Therefore depending on the country you have come from and the type (class) of licence you are wanting to convert, you may or may not have to sit theory and/or practical tests.

At Road Code Driving School our instructors are NZTA Certified and registered. This means that they have been registered by the New Zealand Transport Authority as legal driving instructors.

Our instructors are very friendly, patient and knowledgeable.

Language is also not a barrier as we have instructors whose second language is English. They understand how to work with and support people with people whose first language is not English.

Road Code Driving School Give Way

All people wanting to drive in New Zealand needs to know the official New Zealand Road Code.

We recommend that anyone moving to New Zealand have lessons from one of our instructors to ensure you understand how to apply the New Zealand Road Code.

Other/Custom Courses

Manual Driving Lessons

At Road Code Driving School we are also set up to cater to the following:

  • Companies
  • Schools
  • WINZ Customers
  • Group training
  • Apprentices
  • Manual Car Driving

We can also offer custom courses relating to Class 1 licensing.

For more details on this and any other courses please contact us.

Mock Tests

We also offer Mock Tests for drivers who feel they are ready to take the practical test, either restricted licence test, full licence test or overseas conversion licence test.

Our instructors take you on a Mock Test that simulates the real test.

We start these from the testing station at Orewa.

If you have booked your official test at any of the other testing centres, we can also do the Mock Tests from those locations.

Whilst this is not a lesson, we will point out any driving areas that may need improvement.

However only taking a Mock Test is not a guarantee that you will pass your practical test and we advise that you take lessons from an instructor prior to your test.
